Autumn - Make no mistake about it, in this part of the world, autumn is THE marquee season. Say what you want about schussing down the slopes at Stowe in wintertime - when the leaves begin to turn, New Englanders (real and wannabees, alike) begin to yearn, and for good reason. The annual display of color, here (the dazzling yellow oaks, the flaming red maples and other varieties too numerous to mention), is equaled nowhere else in the world.
But why, here? It's just a happy and unique set of conditions that combine to produce the most spectacular fall foliage, year after year. Scientists tell us that chilly days, long nights and the declining angle of the sun at this time of year, cause cells in leaf stem bases to start changing. The cells begin to die and, in the process, form a wall preventing nutrients from reaching the leaf.
As this happens, chlorophyll, the green pigment of leaves, begins to break down unmasking the yellows and oranges that are always present in the leaf. As cells continue to die the stem eventually weakens causing the leaf to fall to the ground. With no leaves, the tree lies dormant the remainder of the winter. Now, aren't you glad you asked?

The Joe's Pond / St. Johnsbury area experiences its height of fall color usually in the first or second week of October. Depending upon the year, that might vary a little, but a quick check with a fall foliage-tracking site (see our links page) will help you pinpoint the best time to visit. Speaking of which, expect there to be plenty of tourist traffic during Fall Foliage time and every tourist needs a place to stay - so, be sure to book your reservations early.
October daytime high temperatures average about 60°F, 36°F at night.

Winter - In winter, skiing is king and names like Stowe, Killington, Sugar Bush come immediately to mind. But with fame you get crowds, and if you're looking for a great day on the slopes in the uncrowded Joe's Pond area, we highly recommend Burke Mountain (see our links page).
January daytime high temperatures average about 27°F, 5°F at night.

Spring - Ah, spring. The early parts of it can be quite nippy and we usually get lots of rain, but once conditions stabilize, the air warms, the flowers pop out, the grass turns green...and then there's no place like it.
April daytime high temperatures average about 55°F, 31°F at night.

Summer - Yes, we do have summer here - but not the hot, humid kind. You can wear a bathing suit and go swimming without turning blue and even work up a sweat in the garden, but its almost never oppressive and it cools down, nicely, at night.
July daytime high temperatures average about 80°F, 54°F at night.
